For a creative pair, Peter Thwaites and Rebecca Aird are surprisingly pragmatic. The couple, who own the wallpaper and textiles company Rapture & Wright, left London for rural Gloucestershire six years ago in search of somewhere big enough for the table on which they hand-print their designs. Having secured a barn to suit this purpose, they set about finding some land to build a house for themselves nearby.

But far from realising the architectural vision of their dreams, they ended up with a traditional Cotswold cottage. 'We would have loved to build a carbon-neutral wooden house with a veranda and surreal Edward Scissorhands-style hedges,’ Thwaites says. The reality was that they simply didn’t want to fight the local planning department. 'The planners were immovable. It was Cotswold cottage, mock-Georgian or nothing, so I’m afraid we just capitulated.’

It certainly made life easier. The 'tall and un­attractive’ 1940s concrete house that had stood on the site came down in January 2006 and the family (including Amity, now eight, Elsa, six, and Noisy the dog) moved in 11 months later. 'It was all boringly straightforward,’ Thwaites says. 'There were no Grand Designs-type disasters because we weren’t trying to do anything dramatic. It’s just a square house with a door in the middle.’

But it’s a very good square house. And what the building lacks in architectural excitement it more than makes up for with the decor. This is an interior packed with pattern and personality. Paper covers almost every wall; printed fabric hangs at every window and covers every chair, cushion, bed and light fitting. All of it has been designed by Thwaites and Aird, partly because the house doubles as a testing ground for their designs. 'Seeing the prints in situ is the only way we know whether or not something really works,’ Thwaites says.

The pair have also always preferred home-made to shop-bought, so much of the furniture and most of the accessories are their handiwork too. DIY, it seems, is in their blood. Thwaites remembers making a cardboard chandelier for his bedroom at boarding school (it eventually caught fire), while Aird cannot imagine buying a pair of curtains or a cushion. 'The only things we buy are things we can convert, like the kitchen chairs,’ she explains. 'I don’t want to own things that other people have, and I like to have something to show for my work at the end of the day. I guess that’s why I’m a designer and not a banker.
