City officials to discuss Dallas police chase policy today in wake ...
An August police chase that ended in dramatic fashion beside a Dallas Love Field runway led to some renewed chatter about possible changes to the Dallas police chase policy, one of the most restrictive in the country.
The Dallas City Council Public Safety Committee is set to discuss the policy in detail this afternoon. They'll also go through a detailed timeline of the chase that ended with the arrest of convicted felon Michael Laurence Browne (full copy of the committee briefing included after the jump).
Last month's chase raised some questions about security at Love Field . But the overall result of that chase could also be seen as proof for Dallas police officials that the chase policy that was implemented under retired Chief David Kunkle makes sense.
That's because no citizens or police officers were hurt or killed during the mostly slow-speed pursuit, which lasted about an hour. And the man who police were pursuing posed a very real threat to the public if he had remained at large. ( Since his capture, Browne has confessed to numerous violent robberies throughout North Texas .)
There is no indication that police officials are looking to overhaul the policy, which many in the rank and file argue is too restrictive. However Dallas Police Chief David Brown said even before last month's chase that he is open to tweaks .
