Grand Palm hotel resort in Gaborone recently extended their palm of generosity to an impoverished Moshaneng granny and her 24 orphaned grandchildren as they organized a fun-filled pre-Mothers day luncheon for the family.

The colourful event that was held by the poolside within the hotel’s premises, according to Marketing Manager Charne Christensen, was meant to put a smile on the long suffering granny Kealebale Satlhaga for the tireless commitment she has shown in mothering the children over the years.

“The management and staff of the Grand Palm invited you and your family here today in recognition of the role you are playing in the lives of these children,” he said.

Satlhaga’s situation came to the attention of the Grand Palm in October last year when The Voice published her overwhelming plight. Now aged 78, and surviving on limited social services,  Satlhaga found herself taking care of her 24 grand children after her eight children, she said, died of HIV related illnesses.

Last year she was identified by the Habitat for Humanity as the worst of the 34 families that were to benefit from Barclays Bank of Botswana’s housing project. In recognition of her situation the bank built her two houses to replace a tin and mud shack that the family had been living in.

An elated Satlhaga could not avoid shedding tears of joy at the luncheon as she thanked God for her blessings and vowed to utilize her gifts wisely. “I will also make sure that my young kids finish school and have a brighter future so that the next generation can live a much better lifestyle,” she said.
