Student Newspaper Apologizes For Obama Cartoon - Albuquerque News ...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The editor of the Daily Lobo apologized Wednesday for publishing a controversial cartoon that depicted President Barack Obama as a monkey while holding Osama bin Laden’s head.

African-American students at the University of New Mexico said they are disgusted and want to know why more discretion wasn’t used.

Several students protested the cartoon on UNM’s campus on Wednesday.

“We demanded the Daily Lobo show some accountability and print an apology and retraction,” student Christina Foster said.

Many of the protesters said the cartoon depicting Obama as a monkey resembles images used in the past to justify slavery. ee

“Me personally and the paper, we are sorry for the cartoon. It was not our intent to be racist or offend anyone,” Daily Lobo Editor-In-Chief Chris Quintana said.

Quintana said he takes full responsibility. He said he signed off on the publication of the cartoon.

“I understand now, and like I said, I’m deeply sorry and intend to rectify the situation,” Quintana said.

Thursday’s Daily Lobo addressed the entire cartoon controversy. Quintana wrote an article with an explanation for its publication that included an apology.

“By no means is an editorial going to fix everything, but it’s a step in the right direction,” Quintana said.

Quintana said his staff will start meeting with African-American Student Services at UNM. They’ll also go through sensitivity training on a regular basis.
