ARMED FORCES

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Rory D. McLean , son of Joeseph McLean of Wales, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Larry Morris III , son of Larry and Barbara Morris of Sutton, was promoted to captain in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve on April 1. He serves with the 1st Battalion 25th Marines based out of Fort Devens. Capt. Morris will deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in August.

VETERANS NOTES

TODAY

Vernon Hill American Legion Post 435 will hold a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. at the post quarters, 267 Providence St., Worcester. Breakfast will follow the service, and the Vernon Hill American Legion Post 435 Community Service Citizen of the Year award will be presented to Jordan Levy. Tickets for the breakfast cost $10 and may be purchased at the door. The public is invited.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 907 will hold a bike run committee meeting at 6 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, West Street, Gardner. Suggestions are welcome.

MONDAY

Leominster AMVETS Post 38 will meet at 7 p.m. in the Veterans Center, 100 West St., Leominster. Installation of officers will be held. For more information, call (978) 840-0427.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Willie Grout Camp 25 will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Air National Guard building, 50 Skyline Drive, Worcester.

East Side American Legion Post 201 will meet at 7 p.m. at 326 Plantation St., Worcester. The executive board will meet at 6 p.m. Final nominations for elections will be held. CORI checks on those wishing to run for an officer’s position will be necessary. Those interested may contact nomination committee Chairman Mitch Hollow, or committee members Jack Virgilio, Tony Coffone, George O’rrico or Fran Sena. Refreshments will follow the meetings.

TUESDAY

The DAV Auxiliary Worcester Unit 4 will meet in the downstairs meeting room at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Tatnuck Post, 570 Mill St., Worcester. The installation of the newly elected officers will be held at 6 p.m. A meal will follow. This is a joint installation upstairs.

The Disabled American Veterans Worcester Chapter 4 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Tatnuck American Legion Post 288, 570 Mill St., Worcester.

Mr Talks Too Much: Legend of the Devil Dog

A Devil Dog is nothing satanic, it's a name that marines have used since WWI when Germans at the Battle of Belleau Wood , in 1918, saw the marines climb out of the trenches filled with mustard gas and charge up a hill at them. The marines climbed on their hands and feet to reach the top of the hill. They had those gas masks that made them look like they had snouts and they’re eyes were bloodshot from the gas. Their mouths foamed, from over exertion, which was coming out of the masks, making them look like rabid dogs. I don’t know how much of that was real but the “Hounds from Hell” nickname became Devil Dogs after translating it from German and it’s said the Germans started the nickname when they were running for their lives. I've been spending the evening cleaning up the manuscript for The Devil Dog, I eliminated approximately 12,000 words of dull, and boring scenes that included excessive back-story and pointless dialogue. I’m not sweating though, because all the new scenes I’ve planned with the new outline that there should be far more than 12,000 words put back into it. Tonight, I’ll begin filling in those scenes and hopefully this week I’ll have a complete manuscript again, this time with a much faster story pace than before. Hopefully I removed all the lulls in the tension that I had previously with poor pacing.

No, I was convinced by my wife not to join the marines back when I was young and had seriously considered it. I've grown up around military. My dad was a marine, my grandfather was Navy and my step-dad was Air Force. I did a lot of research and discussion with a couple of Marines before writing this book as well. I'm still researching as I write and I have one more marine to talk to before putting on the finishing touches.

I'm an aspiring novelist. I enjoy reading and writing all genres, but I prefer fantasy above all, magic, monsters and so on. My debut novel will have none of these things though, but it's something I've wanted to write for a long time. It’s a modern day action thriller about a recon special forces marine who gets caught up in a bad situation involving a dangerous international criminal.
