Christopher Seaman has one more concert weekend as RPO's music director
It has been a long season of goodbyes for Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's long-time music director Christopher Seaman, who has sprinkled the season with his favorite repertoire and even a live, commercial recording to be released next year. But the countdown begins now: There is only one final concert weekend before he officially steps down and hands the baton over to Arild Remmereit.In his 13 years at the helm of the orchestra, Seaman has been responsible for increasing the level of music making of the RPO and community engagement through his pre-concert chats and Symphony 101 and 201 concerts. He will have made three successful commercial recordings with the RPO. He oversaw the building and completion of the Eastman Theatre expansion project, which included an overhaul of what's now Kodak Hall and the brand new Eastman School of Music's East Wing. Question: How do you feel with only one concert run left with the RPO after 13 years?
Answer: It's a mixture of feelings. It's going to be a wonderful occasion. I've got people coming to visit from other parts of America, a whole bunch of people from the UK, and all my Rochester friends will be there. I've loved my time here; it's been for me most fulfilling and very productive. I love the musicians, and I will miss them. The public has been supportive personally to me in a way I've never experienced. But I will be back every year with my new hat on, conductor laureate for life. The relationship will continue, and I will always be a member of the RPO conducting staff. It will mean whereever I conduct throughout the world forever, my biography will mention this orchestra and my title with it. That is something that makes me feel absolutely terrific.
A: It was a great experience. There was snow on the ground, I remember. (Former music director David) Zinman was very kind and put me up. They lived on Highland Avenue with one of those houses with a driveway with a slope of about 45 degrees. If it's going to snow, you leave your car on the street, or most people do. We left our car on the street, around the corner somewhere. We got up the next morning and it had snowed so much overnight that all these cars looked like igloos.
We turned up for the 9:30 rehearsal, the entire orchestra on stage, bang, 9:30, nobody's late. I was terribly impressed with that. Then I discovered that the weather is like that a lot, and people are used to it.
